Man, 54, robbed at gunpoint by youngsters

Police: Two of the three young suspects were armed.

Three young suspects held up and robbed a 54-year-old man at gun and knife-point.

According to Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, the suspects ranged from 22 to 28 and robbed the victim at about 1pm on Sunday (21 August).

Lefakane added the victim was allegedly walking along an open veld near the Cooke 3 mineshaft when he was confronted by the youngsters.

Two of the three youngsters were allegedly armed; one with a knife and another with a firearm.

The suspects then searched the man and took his money and phone before fleeing on foot. The victim later ran for help when the mine’s security personnel noticed and chased the suspects.

“They managed to catch all three suspects still in possession of the victim’s phone and money.

The suspects were arrested on the scene and they will be charged with armed robbery,” Lefakane said.

The youngsters are expected to appear in the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court today (23 August).
