The suspect allegedly raped a 30-year-old woman and robbed her of her cellphone on 22 July at approximately 12.30pm near the bridge between Simunye and Bekkersdal. According to Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police’s spokesperson, the woman was allegedly walking to Simunye when she was confronted by the suspect.

She said the suspect allegedly held the woman at knife-point and took her into the veld where he ordered her to undress. He later raped her without protection, ordered her to clean herself up and then left.

“The victim managed to walk to the Bekkersdal Police station to lay a charge,” Lefakane said.

“We are pleading with members of the community to refrain from walking alone in secluded areas. Rather use open roads or walk in groups,” she said.

The suspect is still at large and the Bekkersdal Police are appealing to the community to contact them should they spot the suspect. Information can be reported to 082 778 9048.
