Dedicated traffic cop passes away

Ronnie van der Merwe passed away at the age of 57.

A well-known face in the Randfontein Traffic Police tragically passed away recently and the town’s top brass gathered to honour his memory.

Ronald ‘Ronnie’ van der Merwe passed away in his sleep at the age of 57 on Friday, 12 August. He was a well-known face on the administrative side of the Traffic Department.

On Thursday, 18 August, members of the Randfontein and Krugersdorp Traffic Police departments, political dignitaries and representatives of the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU), among others, gathered at the Toekomsrus Community Hall for a memorial service.

The many SAMWU members present honoured Ronnie with their voices. They gathered choir-style before everyone and sang prepared songs. Their message to the family, even though they are in mourning, was to let Ronnie go as he lived a good life and was a good man.

Lucas Marite, one of Ronnie’s colleagues, gave a tribute at the memorial and shared his experiences of working with Ronnie with Ronnie’s loved ones. Lucas explained that Ronnie had a knack for cooking.”Whenever you’d see him, he would be cooking. Cooking was really his passion. Furthermore,” Lucas said,

“Ronnie was a great administrator and a workaholic but above all, he is irreplaceable.”

Ronnie will be laid to rest on Saturday, 20 August in Toekomsrus. The funeral service will start at 10am at the Ebenezer Congregational Church in Ruby Street.
