Graves disrespected by urinating mourners

'I take offence at anyone urinating in the open, especially in a cemetery'

Lorna Meyer is just one of many concerned residents fed up with the numerous mourners urinating in the open at the Greenhills Cemetery.

Lorna, who has been living in her house across the road from cemetery for almost 30 years, explained this is not the first time she’s experienced this unpleasant sight – it’s been happening for as long as she can remember.

She explained to the Herald that the cemetery only has one set of bathrooms, located in the top section. As the cemetery expands, the distance between where the services are held and the bathrooms near the entrance increases.

“I take offence at anyone urinating in the open, especially in a cemetery. The municipality and/ or funeral homes need to take toilet facilities for mourners into consideration,” Lorna said. “They can’t only provide toilets up there and none down here.”

Although she has urged mourners to stop this practice, as it is disrespectful, they allegedly carry on urinating in the open.

When the Herald visited the cemetery, we found that the only bathroom available for visitors is situated at the top of the cemetery, near the entrance.

In the bottom section, the Herald asked Johannes Nedamvani, a grave maintenance worker, where the bathrooms are situated. Johannes replied by pointing at the trees at the very bottom of the cemetery, which aligns with Lorna’s residence.

This is a topic of great concern, as residents describe the action as ‘unhygienic’ and ‘disrespectful’.
