Family of murder victim seeks closure

Uncle: "The silence from the police is killing me."

The family of Gervano Volgraaff, a 21-year-old man who died after being shot on 23 November last year, is outraged, because the man who shot him has not yet been caught.

Clymene Wessels, uncle of the deceased, says he has since not heard anything regarding the investigation of his nephew’s death. “I want to know if someone has been arrested or questioned because the silence from the police is killing me,” Clymene said.

The officer in charge of the investigation, Warrant Officer Thabiso Duiker, is allegedly on leave at present. However, his commander says new information has surfaced that can be used to solve the case. Captain Appel Ernst says the case is still being investigated.

Farren Volgraaff, the murdered man’s sister, says she lost all purpose in life after her brother died.

I feel like the gunman took more than one life the day they killed him,” she said. “I too died inside that day.”

According to Wessels, other family members are also struggling to cope with the death of their beloved relative. “His aunt developed insomnia and his niece has been suffering from panic attacks since the incident,” Wessels said. “It was devastating news for us all; one moment he was smoking in the street and the next he was shot. We just need closure so that we can focus on starting fresh.”

The police urge any person who might be able to assist W/O Duiker to trace the suspect to contact him urgently, on 011 278 8100. Community members are also asked to assist the police with any information they might have. Anyone with information can contact the Crime Stop number – 08600 10111, or send an SMS to Crime Line on 32211 to report crime anonymously.
