Candy store raided: Expired treats seized

'This is a big health risk for the community and should be destroyed immediately'

The Municipal Health Services joined forces with a number of members of the Randfontein Traffic Police and confiscated three bakkie-loads of expired treats deemed unfit for human consumption from a tuckshop named Sweet Street in Homelake on Friday (29 July).

Hard candy, lollipops, ice-cream and crisps were among the treats loaded into the vehicles by the officials. The municipal health members checked all stock for signs of contamination or filth and loaded it into the bakkies.

Kenny Mampondo, traffic police spokesperson said the goods are not fit for consumption and must be taken to the dumpster immediately.

“This is a big health risk for the community and should be destroyed immediately,” Kenny said.

The goods will be transported to the Randfontein dumpsite later today. Kenny said this is not the first or last raid of its kind that they will execute. Last week, the municipal health services confiscated similar expired goods from a tuckshop in Westonaria.

“We are going to sustain this initiative and not stop until businesses sell edible goods to customers,” Kenny said.

The Sweet Street owner did not want to be named, and declined to comment.
