VIDEO: Bowling Club damaged in hailstorm

'I was in my room when I heard a crash'

The recent hail storm in Randfontein caused devastation all over town, one of the worst-hit places being the Randfontein Country Club.

Various buildings and trees on the county club’s premises were damaged. The worst damage occurred at the club’s squash courts. The roof blew clean off the building and landed on the premises of the Randfontein Bowling Club.

“It happened yesterday (25 July) at about 5pm. I was in my room when I heard a crash. The crash was the roof of the squash court blowing off. It all happened so fast. One moment the roof was on the building and the next, it was on our green,” said Joseph Gaowe, caretaker at the Randfontein Bowling Club.

Three rinks (rinks 1, 2 and 6) on one of the greens will be out of commission until repairs can be made.

“We have a ladies competition coming up and now this happened. Look, the damage isn’t so bad but we can’t play on the green as it is. I’ll have grow some of the grass back where it was damaged,” Joseph said.

Harry Richards from the Randfontein Golf Club said the old golf clubhouse was also damaged in the storm. He said the clubhouse is not just a building – it’s a 100-year-old monument. Harry estimated that 10 trees had been blown down in the storm.

The cost of the damages now has to be estimated in order to get the repairs ball rolling.
