‘The Earth can’t fight for itself’

Aldous Huxley said, in his book entitled Brave New World, that “Ending is better than mending.” This is what one Randfontein pageant first-timer is aiming for regarding environmental degradation.

Mo Seabi, a resident of Helikon Park, is a regional finalist in the Miss Earth South Africa pageant. Mo said it is the first time she has entered anything resembling a pageant, and for a first-timer, she has certainly outdone herself.

She said she’d always followed the Miss Earth South Africa competition online, and found their projects interesting, so when the opportunity came to enter, she jumped at it.

“I’ve always been passionate about the environment, and that’s exactly what drew me to the Miss Earth South Africa competition – it’s all about the environment and sustainability. It’s not just another pageant; it’s about making a difference in the environment. The Earth can’t fight for itself, so we have to fight for it,” she said.

Mo doesn’t only try to create awareness about the environment – her heart also lies with the community she lives in. As a result, she went to the Connie Mulder Centre, a haven for disabled people, to give back to the community for Mandela Day.

She and a group of women from her church, the New Life Church, assisted in the Connie Mulder kitchen. They peeled potatoes, and chopped vegetables for its residents on Saturday, 23 July.

Mo plans to host many more events aimed at helping the community and educating children about the importance of preserving the environment.
