Aerosol cans needed for school fees

‘I will work my arms off for my child’

Hannetjie Havenga, a single mother of three with extremely poor eye-sight, is in desperate need of empty aerosol cans to pay her 16-year-old son’s school fees.

When Hannetjie’s partner passed away approximately three years ago she had no source of income or support. It has been tough for her and her family ever since.

In order to put food on the table Hannetjie and a friend opened a small business nearby, where they sifted sawdust and sold it. She said their market included a few local farmers and a big sandblasting company, but there is no business at the moment, and therefore no income. She is presently trying to make ends meet and help her youngest son finish high school on a minimal state grant.

Hannetjie has now come up with an initiative to collect empty aluminium aerosol cans in order to trade them in for an extra income for her son. The idea occurred to her while she was driving through the veld, and noticed several aerosol cans lying around. When she got home, she did some research and discovered a number of ways in which these cans can be used to benefit her and her family.

“I will work my arms off for my child,” she said.

Hannetjie sees this as the only way she, as a single parent, can support her child, and is requesting the help of the Randfontein community in collecting as many aerosol cans (such as deodorant cans) as possible. All donations are welcome and can be dropped off at the Herald’s offices.
