Foreign national on the run after armed robbery

The suspect made off with money, cigarettes and airtime.

Police have launched a manhunt for an Ethiopian national after he robbed a fellow countryman at gunpoint.

According to Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, spokesperson for the Bekkersdal Police, the incident occurred on 18 June in Spooktown, Bekkersdal.

Lefakane said the victim allegedly locked up his business for the day and was walking to his room when the suspect confronted him.

She said the suspect allegedly approached the victim and started a conversation before pulling a gun on the victim and demanding money.

Lefakane said the victim reportedly did not take him seriously at first and thought it was a prank as he knows the suspect well.

The suspect then fired a warning shot to show the gravity of the situation before the victim handed over the demanded money as well as cigarettes and airtime. The suspect then made his way to a Ford Bantam bakkie and drove off.

The suspect is still at large and police are looking for any information that could lead to the tracing and arrest of the suspect.

To report any information regarding the case, detective Constable Kagiso Ramphore can be contacted on 011 755 0006 or the standby detective can be contacted on 072 561 94 17.
