Teen found guilty of murder

The two suspects including a teen are believed to be part of an infamous gang.

Two suspects, one of whom is still a teenager, both believed to be members of the infamous Colombians gang, have been found guilty of murder.

According to Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, spokesperson for the Bekkersdal Police, the gang terrorised the Bekkersdal community for quite some time.

Zenzile Sibiya, 22, and Sibusiso Limba, 19, were found guilty of stabbing Xolani Dyantyi, 22, to death last year. Sibiya was sentenced to 22 years behind bars while Limba will spend 15 years in jail. The sentences were handed down in the Johannesburg High Court on 4 July.

Lefakane said a witness had alleged that Dyantyi was in Bekkersdal with a friend on 22 February 2015, when he was approached by a group of men asking about gangs. The witness intervened as he knew Dyantyi was not part of the gang, but the men had already pulled out their knives and proceeded to stab Dyantyi repeatedly. He was rushed to hospital but later succumbed to the multiple stab wounds.

Sergeant Secha Shiviti from the Bekkersdal Police investigated the matter, and is said to have worked around the clock to find the suspects and ensure they receive prolonged sentences.

Colonel Mbangwa Nkhswashu, Bekkersdal Police station commander said this should serve as an example to the youth, showing them crime does not pay. He also applauded Shiviti for his good work.
