Campaign launched to protect public property

The Gauteng Department of Development Infrastructure gears up for the elections.

The Gauteng Department of Infrastructure Development (GDID) recently launched its I Care – We Care campaign in Westonaria.

The event took place at the Westonaria Local Municipality on Wednesday, 13 July and various areas of the town were visited by officials from the municipality and the police, as well as GDID officials.

The I Care – We Care campaign aims to create a sense of ownership within the community in order to ultimately protect public properties located within Randfontein and Westonaria.

Jacob Mamabolo, the Gauteng MEC for Infrastructure Development initiated the campaign and has put the involvement of communities at the centre of the Department’s programme for the upcoming elections to ensure the safety of the community, officials and to protect precious public property.

Mamabolo says the campaign is aimed at mobilising community members to work with government to protect public facilities from destruction and vandalism. The project was strategically launched just before the local elections, which tend to be a time of unrest in some areas.

The GDID hopes the campaign, aimed at making a success of the programmes implemented to prevent destruction and vandalism, results in a strong partnership between the community and itself.

The initiative comes after violent protests in Westonaria, specifically in Bekkersdal, over the past few years have resulted in the destruction and burning of public facilities.

The campaign encourages the community and stakeholders to sign a pledge, agreeing to work with the government to report any incidents involving destruction of public property.
