A band looking to change the music world

'When we play music it serves as a gateway to another place'

Neo Galaxy left the crowd in awe last Saturday during a performance at the Motion Church in a bid to raise funds for their Oppikoppi performance.

Thane Maseko, Dumisani Tshabalala and Sphelele Zulu performed three of their best hits – Pulse; Fire and Ice, and Whiskey, as well as a cover of Dallas Green’s Day old hate.

The reason behind Motion Church as the venue is a nostalgic one – Neo Galaxy’s lead guitarist explained their ‘brotherhood’ came into existence when they were children attending the church. The trio performed for the church’s youth and later they played for the church itself. After going their separate ways to complete their tertiary qualifications, they decided to reunite and start a band.

Needless to say they developed, and started their own genre, which they call neo-rock – a combination of indie, soul and rock music.

The band does it for themselves in every way, from recording to writing and even advertising.

“When we play, it serves as a gateway to another place … and that place is called Neo Galaxy,” Sphelele said.

One of Neo Galaxy’s aims is to standardise the way small local bands are paid. In South Africa, most small live music bands are compensated in relation to the size of the audience they pull. Neo Galaxy wants to change this. Their aim is to push for compensation regardless of the size of the crowd or the number of people. They believe this will take local music to the next level as musicians can then do what they love and earn a living.

Neo Galaxy has already created an uproar as one of their hits, Pulse, has received recognition on the air. They still hope to release their first album soon but for now they have their sights set on giving the performance of a lifetime at Oppikoppi.
