Hungry tummies filled by local church

Local church teaches disadvantaged youth about the bible.

Church of the Nazarene in Toekomsrus hosted a Winter Bible School from 4 to 8 July for children of the community.

The event takes place annually. It started in 1980 and is held in pastor Saule Sedith’s residence where he accommodates up to 150 children every time the event is held.

During the bible school, the children are provided with two meals as well as extra food to take home to their brothers or sisters who may not have made it to the Bible School. When the children aren’t eating, they are doing arts and crafts, playing games, dancing and singing.

Every morning of the bible school, pastor Saule, his wife Jessie and their daughter Marjorie van Schalkwyk, among others, would form a group and march down the streets of Toekomsrus with a banner inviting children to Church of Nazarene’s Bible School.

Pastor Saule is active in his lessons and teaches them arts and crafts as well. When the Herald visited him during this year’s Winter Bible School, he showed how to make paper plans out of empty rusk cartons.

The aim of the project is to involve every child in the neighbourhood and teach them about the Bible in a fun, interactive manner. As the schools are currently closed, some of the children other wise have no real source of food during the day. Therefore Church of the Nazarene aims to feed these hungry tummies and keep them happy, pastor Saule explained.

This project is very popular in the community as well-known child evangelist Roelf Kalinsky made an appearance on July 6 and gave a Bible lesson.

The Randfontein Publicity Association supported this project as well by donating peanut butter, packets of soup, mielie meal, rice, cold drink, sweets, bracelets and key rings.
