A timeline look at R’fontein’s water woes

Are some of R'fontein's water woes soon to be gone?

Randfontein has suffered water woes for years, but some of the problems may soon be a thing of the past.

Water and sanitation problems have been reported by community members from all over Randfontein, but Greenhills and Elandsvlei seem to have been hit the hardest.

In Greenhills, both the Greenhills and Tweedeboats Streams are often polluted as a result of broken sewerage pipes as well as other external factors. The two streams run from Greenhills through Elandsvlei, polluting water and wildlife as they go.

In Elandsvlei, a pipe believed to be from the Sewage Farm has also been a source of concern for Peter Dick, DA Councillor for Ward 9, which is where the streams are located.

In January this year, R5 million was awarded to the Randfontein Local Municipality to upgrade the Waste Water Treatment Works, thereby curbing the water and sanitation issues in Randfontein. The Herald has not been able to establish what progress has been made with the upgrade, although it was initially stated that the project would be complete by the end of March this year.
