In light of a recent ATM robbery where a woman was robbed of R3 000 in Greenhills, here are some safety tips given by the South African Police Service (SAPS) on keeping your cash safe.

It is very important to shield your PIN when punching the numbers, even if you are alone at an ATM. If you are having problems at the ATM it is best to go to the bank for assistance; never accept help from anyone and never ask someone else to help you.

When considering online shopping it is advisable to register for 3D secure. This is known as verified by Visa or Mastercard SecureCode and should be done before using your bank card to purchase online. This prohibits unknown sources from accessing your personal bank details.

Be aware when receiving notifications from companies saying that you’ve won a competition, especially if you didn’t enter; it is crucial not to respond with any information regarding your personal details.

Always carry as little cash as you possibly can, this will reduce your chances of becoming a target. It is advised to make use of alternative methods such as Internet Banking and Cell-phone banking. Various banking apps are available for such uses.

Remember to always be extra cautious when dealing with your cash.
