Safety tips for your midterm break

How to ensure a safe and relaxing holiday.

If you are fortunate enough to be able to plan a July mid-term holiday for you and your loved ones, there are some basic safety measures that you should not neglect.

Theunis Kotze, ADT Security’s general manager inland says the safety of one’s belongings and family must be a priority throughout the year, and this includes while you are enjoying some rest and relaxation away from home.

Before you leave home, be sure that you have saved the correct telephone numbers for emergency services and law enforcement agencies in the area where you will be visiting.

“You will need to know who to call for help if something goes wrong,” says Kotze.

He also suggests doing research into the security measures installed at the guest house or bed-and-breakfast you are considering.

“When making enquiries about availability, I ask whether or not there is an alarm system installed or a security presence on the property.”

There are other ways to ensure a safe and relaxing holiday:

• Don’t visit areas that you are unfamiliar with, especially late at night.

• Always be aware of your surroundings and of the people around you.

• If you do find yourself confronted by a mugger it is important not to resist, especially if the perpetrator has a weapon. Instead, give up your valuables move away and then try to find a safe place from which to contact the police.

Do not leave your guest-house or hotel with a large amount of cash on your person or wearing extravagant jewellery.

Rather leave these items in a locked safe in your room.

• If you are carrying a handbag when out and about, keep it close to your body. Do not let it dangle by the straps, as that makes it easier for someone to snatch.

• If you prefer carrying your purse, wallet or cellphone on your person, keep it in an inside coat-pocket or the front-pocket of trousers and not the back.

Kotze adds that a mobile panic button is a handy safety measure, especially when you are on holiday.

“Our ADT FindU app turns any smartphone into a GPS-driven mobile panic button that helps us pinpoint your location in real-time and provides response to assist you in an emergency, even when you are away on holiday.”
