New care centre to be opened at former Life Esidimeni

'The centre will cater for individuals requiring short term treatment in a hospital based facility.'

A new Randfontein In-patient Abuse Centre will be launched to community members on Sunday, 26 June.

The centre will be operated from what is, until 30 June 2016, the Life Esidimeni Randfontein Care Centre.

A statement to the Herald said, “Life Healthcare Group has partnered with the Gauteng Department of Social Development (DSD) in bringing drug and alcohol rehabilitation treatment services to the West Rand. The centre will cater for individuals requiring short-term treatment in a hospital based facility.”

In November 2015 the Herald reported that Randfontein’s Life Esidimeni mental hospital will be closing, leaving hundreds of patients and workers destitute.

Early in June, family members of mentally ill patients in Randfontein marched outside the Gauteng Health Department in Johannesburg in opposition of the impending closure of Life Esidimeni.

There families of mental health patients at the institution were told their loved ones will either be sent to mainstream mental health institutions or will be released into their families’ care.
