Correctional Youth Summit held in R’fontein

Minister Masutha visits R'fontein to convene third Correctional Youth Summit.

The Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Michael Masutha, recently convened the third Correctional Youth Summit in Toekomsrus.

The summit took place on Saturday, 18 June, with Masutha hosted by the Randfontein Executive Mayor, Mzi Khumalo. It forms part of a series of Youth Summits being hosted across the country. The first summit of the year was hosted in Richards Bay on 19 March, with the second held in Bloemfontein on 13 April.

Guest speaker Nathi Mankayi, who has made a name for himself in the South African music industry despite growing up in poverty and spending time behind bars, joined Masutha in motivating Randfontein’s youngsters.

The summits are held to search for new ways in which young people can achieve their full potential, and to deter them from getting involved in crime. This is done by engaging with the youth – especially those who are troubled – and various stakeholders who play a role in the development of human capital.

Masutha explained that the youth makes up a large percentage of the criminal population as they resort to crime in an effort to survive. To combat this, he said the way in which resources are used needs to be nuanced in order to stay on track with the local development agenda.

He is determined to promote partnerships with communities and stakeholders across the country to prevent crime.
