The West Rand Cluster Police reached out to 300 youth during their Sports Against Crime event.
The event was hosted by the West Rand Cluster Women’s Network in partnership with Men for Change on 15 June in Mohlakeng, just a day before national Youth Day.
“Most of the spectators were dressed in school uniform to pay homage to the youth of 1976,” Constable Lucky Matome, Spokesperson for the Tarlton Police said.
Sports codes represented at the event included soccer and netball. Five netball teams and seven soccer teams took part in the event. Players from all teams in both sports codes were unemployed youth as the event was used to inspire the young West Randers as well.
Mohlakeng XI walked away as winners of the soccer section and Brothers Club A were crowned the netball winners.
The Mogale City Local Municipality along with the West Rand District Municipality sponsored trophies as well as kit for the winning teams as part of their Ntirhisano Project.
Randfontein Station Commander, Brigadier Mashole Jacob Manamela encouraged youth at the event to stay away from crime and to rather participate in sport.
