Seven arrested for outstanding fines

'Drivers who have been arrested will go straight to the cells'

The Randfontein Traffic Police showed no mercy to unlawful taxi-drivers in town.

The Traffic Police took to the R28 in Westergloor to clamp down on taxi-drivers who have warrants of arrests against their names for outstanding traffic fines.

The operation started in the early hours of Tuesday 21 June. When the Herald arrived on scene, seven taxi-drivers had been arrested. Three of them had more than one warrant of arrest against them, while one had outstanding fines amounting to R2 600.

There was also a warrant of arrest against an eighth taxi-driver, but he had enough money on his person to pay his outstanding fines.

“The taxi-drivers who have been arrested will go straight to the cells and will have to appear in court. They will have to ask their next of kin to assist them to pay their fines,” Kenny Mampondo, Randfontein Traffic Chief explained.

Mampondo said this is only the beginning of the clamp-down, as the Traffic Police will be running various other operations in the next few days.
