‘If a child is happy, I’m happy’

Orphan uses her life experiences to help others like her.

Carryou Ministry has added yet another youth to their long list of success stories.

Chané Williams, 25-year-old orphan, grew up in Toekomsrus and was raised by her grandmother as her mother died when she was still in school. A friend informed her about Carryou and she soon became a beneficiary of the organisation.

“Their help changed my life and I wanted to give something back. During school holidays I would hang around and do what ever was needed doing. I washed dishes, swept floors and helped in the kitchen,” she said.

Chané started working at Carryou Ministry’s Drop-in Centre in Toekomsrus as a volunteer after she completed her matric. Not long after, she was chosen for the Extended Public Works Programme (EPWP).

Chané was later appointed as an EPWP coordinator where she was accountable for the preparation of reports for the Department of Social Development and sourcing training for EPWP workers.

In 2014 she completed a two year child and youth care work programme and received a formal qualification. Not only was she chosen to be trained as a Carryou Safe Park coordinator, she received Early Childhood Development (ECD) training as well. Additionally she is also involved in Carryou Ministry’s church activities.

Chané says she would like to study child psychology in future as she loves being able to work with children. “The children make me happy. If I can make a child smile I am happy,” she said.
