Youth Day tourney brings community together

W'aria's youth were kept off the streets for Youth Day.

Nelson Mandela and François Pienaar proved in 1995 that sport can bring a nation together and that historic event has a trickle-down effect on communities today.

Xpandable Roots Trading in partnership with Westonaria Local Municipality held a Youth Day event with this in mind; bringing youth together through sport.

The event took place over three days; 16, 18, and 19 June. Sports codes represented at the event included soccer, netball, and basketball, volleyball and athletics.

Evans Ramokga, one of the organisers of the event said they held the event pull the youth off the streets and show them there is more to life than drug abuse.

The event kicked off to a great start and drew not only youth but other community members.

The soccer section of the tournament was kicked off with the Excellent Rangers going against Jonrik Mining and Engineering.

Jonrik seemed to be the favourites for the first win of the tournament by the amount of supporters backing them but Excellent Rangers proved to be the better team.

Jonrik dominated ball possession in the first and most of the second half but only managed to score one goal in the first half with many shots at goal to spare.

The Rangers flailed around on the field, looking much less structured than Jonrik but they played with one goal in mind – winning.

During the second half the score was 1 all and both teams realised it was time to put another ball away into the net before the final whistle.

The Rangers came alive but had difficulty penetrating Jonrik’s solid defense but kept pressuring their backs, waiting for them to make a mistake.

The last five minutes of the match proved to be the most crucial as the Rangers managed to get two balls past Jonrik’s goal keeper, knocking the favourites to win off their pedestal.
