Kidnappers turn themselves in

A Bekkersdal man was kidnapped and assaulted for a phone.

A Bekkersdal man was allegedly kidnapped for being in possession of a cellphone.

According to Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, spokesperson for the Bekkersdal Police, the victim was allegedly walking with a friend along Xuma Street when he was confronted by more than seven men, ranging in age from 27 to 37.

“The men began to accuse the victim of stealing a cellphone from them,” Lefakane said.

The suspects asked how the phone had come into his possession, and he responded that he’d got it from an acquaintance. The suspects asked him to take them to said acquaintance, but when he could not be found, they held the victim against his will and began to assault him.

The suspects returned him home at approximately 9:30pm, Lefakane said.

In an unusual turn of events, after the victim told the suspects that he was going to report the incident to the police, they accompanied him to the police station, where they were arrested.

The suspects will appear in the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court today.
