Matric a two year course?

The public have 21 days to let their voices be heard on the matter.

The Department of Basic Education is considering making matric a two year course for struggling pupils.

The proposition is that pupils who are pushed through to grade 12 after failing the previous grade twice will be able to write a portion of their exams in December and the remainder in June in the following year.

The aim of the programme is to stretch out the number of subjects pupils need to write over a longer period of time.

The department is looking at implementing the programme in 2017.

Elijah Mhlanga, Department of Basic Education spokesperson said,

We piloted it last year but there was no uniformity in terms of its application. The uptake was also very low because it was late in the year.”

He added the department wants every pupil who enters the education system to leave with a matric certificate of a good quality. The department has noticed that some pupils are not coping in the current system and support measures need to be put in place to ensure they pass.

The public have 21 days from 3 June to give their views on the matter for the department to consider before undertaking the decision.
