Former cop? Re-enlist now

Police want to re-appoint the best of the best.

The Police are calling all former policemen back to their ranks.

Lieutenant General Khomotso Phahlane, Acting National Commissioner of the Police, announced that the 2016/2017 re-enlistment has been approved, but will only be relevant in the 2016/2017 financial year.

The police force is looking to re-employ former members and appoint them into ranks ranging from constable to colonel. These appointments will be guided by vacant funded posts within the fixed establishment of the police.

The police have made the decision to capacitate several specialised police units such as the K9 unit, the detective service, visible policing, and public order policing and support.

Police have ensured that the re-enlistment process will not replace or affect the normal recruitment and training process.

It goes without saying that we are looking to re-employ the best of the best,” Phahlane said.

In the previous re-enlistment process in the 2015/2016 financial year, 3152 applications were received but only 529 met the criteria. 180 applicants were deployed in the detective service, 297 went to visible policing, and 52 were deployed in the support environment with ranks ranging from constable to colonel.

Former police officers who will be applying for re-enlistment will be subjected to a thorough screening process including:
• A psychological assessment
• Fingerprinting
• Reference-checking
• Medical testing
• Previous police employment records will be checked

Re-enlistment criteria include:
• Applicants must have completed basic police training and functional police courses
• Applicants must have a senior certificate or higher
• Applicants must have a code B or heavier driver’s license
• Applicants must not have a criminal record or case pending
• Applicants must not have been declared unfit to possess a firearm
• Applicants must serve in the police before reaching pensionable age (60)
• Applicants must be willing to relocate
• Applicants must not have been involved in any business activity that could compromise the integrity of the police

Re-enlistment is not applicable for:
• Officers who were dishonourably discharged or dismissed
• Offices who left due to retirement
• Individuals awaiting finalisation of a disciplinary or criminal proceeding
• Officers who left due to ill-health retirement or medical boarding
