Toekies man goes from rags to riches

'I may see a child has not gone to school. It is then my job to find out why.'

Carryou Ministry has brought about one more success story in Toekomsrus.

This success story is that of 29-year-old Lucas Motshotsho who used to be a Toekomsrus Carryou Ministries beneficiary. Lucas is now a child and youth care worker at the very same Drop In Centre he used to get monthly food parcels from.

Lucas’ story can be used to inspire current child beneficiaries at the Toekomsrus Drop In Centre who visit the centre every day after school to receive food and get assistance with their homework.

After Lucas finished his matric, he volunteered at the Drop In centre and later got absorbed into Carryou as a caregiver. He was then offered an opportunity to further his education and was trained as a child and youth care worker.

“I grabbed it [the opportunity] with both hands and applied,” Lucas said.

His job currently is to visit families on the ground and to establish how Carryou can assist them.

I spend a lot of time talking to and observing people. For example I may see a child has not gone to school. It is then my job to find out why.

“Perhaps he or she is being bullied or is in trouble with the teachers. In a case like that I may have to play advocate for the child and intercede with the headmaster so we can get the child back to school. Where necessary we seek the help of outside resources,” he said.

Lucas explained further that nothing makes him happier than seeing a child who was previously not doing well at school suddenly blossoming.
