5 000 expected for Toekies Youth Day prayer

Residents: It's about time our own history is rewritten.

Residents of Toekomsrus are planning a massive celebration for National Youth Day.

“Similar to how the youth woke up with a plan in 1976, the residents of Toekomsrus will do the same,” said Lester Fritz, a resident of Toekomsrus.

“It’s about time our own history is rewritten.

When South Africans remember June 16, the only image imprinted in their minds is that of a youth massacre. It is about time we change that image to our children,” added Grevon Jacobs, Beg2differ representative.

The Toekomsrus community plans to stand together and make new meaningful memories for generations to come in Toekomsrus on Youth Day.

“We anticipate that about 5 000 residents of Toekomsrus will meet at 10am to form a circle around Diamond and Goud Streets in Toekomsrus. We will pray and speak life over our community and engage in the Toekomsrus Mexican wave. All community members are welcome,” Fritz explained.

Organisers of the big event plan to involve residents of Diamond and Goud Streets by getting them out of their properties into the street to join in with the prayer from where they are.

“All participants will get together after the prayer to take a group photo similar to Sam Nzima’s depiction of the 1976 massacre only this picture will depict cheers of happiness,” Fritz said.

Organisers plan on enlarging the photo and erecting it at the entrance of the Toekomsrus community.

According to Fritz,

It will serve as a symbol of the day Toekomsrus stepped out of the wilderness and entered into their land of milk and honey.”
