VIDEO: Residents demand justice for victim

Family and friends of deceased woman protest against granting bail to accused.

A group of angry Toekomsrus residents protested outside the Randfontein Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 2 June, as the man accused of killing the mother of his child made an appearance in a bail application.

The murder accused allegedly stabbed his ex-girlfriend, 25-year-old Roxanne Andrews, who is also the mother of his child. The incident took place on Friday, 6 May. The accused was arrested shortly after the incident and has been in jail since.

Scores of family members and friends of the deceased were seen holding up placards and singing songs at the entrance of the court in a bid to prevent the court from granting the accused bail.

Pastor André Roberts, member of the Toekomsrus Community Policing Forum (CPF) said they had already handed in their petition against bail being granted to the accused.

Abuse must be stopped. This happens so often in our community and it’s time that we take a stand,” Roberts said.

The murder accused was due to appear in the Randfontein Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 2 June, but the case has been postponed and the accused remanded in custody until Friday, 10 June.

The protesters are anxiously awaiting the outcome of the hearing.
