WAWA visits door-to-door while standing up for children

Enrique Bhana: Children are the future of this beautiful country.

Women Against Women and Child Abuse (WAWA) recently went door-to-door in Toekomsrus, making children aware of the dangers in society and supporting Child Protection Week, which ran from 29 May to 5 June.

National Child Protection Week is marked annually to raise awareness of the rights of children. It aims to mobilise all sectors of the society to care for and protect children.

“The campaign is led by the Minister of Social Development; however, it is important that all South Africans play a role in protecting children and creating a safe and secure environment for them,” said Enrique Bhana from WAWA.

‘Child protection’ means to ensure the safety, well-being, care and protection of children through an integrated multi-disciplinary approach.

The main aim of Child Protection Week is to focus South Africa on the holistic development of the care and protection of children, not only in Toekies, but in South Africa.

“The Department of Social Development is the keeper of the Children’s Act and we as WAWA are just doing our small bit in a big way,” Bhana added.

He continued,

Kids face many challenges these days; that is why we have to educate and make everyone aware of the importance of the protection of children.

“They are the future of this beautiful country.

“WAWA is making children aware of dangers like child labour and exploitation, child trafficking, drug and alcohol abuse, pornography, HIV and Aids, and domestic violence, just to name a few. Children should however not just have rights, but also responsibilities,” Bhana continues.

Bhana said their aim is to also make people aware there is help out there and that WAWA exists to assist them.

WAWA Toekies operates 24 hours a day, and is dedicated to providing support and counselling to victims of gender-based violence and substance abuse.
