UPDATE West Rand murders: ‘A team is working round the clock’ – R’fontein Police

Randfontein Police urge residents to scrutinise their clients before meetings.

A team of investigators has been hand-picked to investigate the recent wave of murders in the Krugersdorp area. The body of one victim was found in Randfontein.

Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson assured us, saying “A team is working round the clock to ensure the investigation is done objectively and methodically”.

She said the team is following up on all possible leads to uncover the truth about each individual case.

Police also will be investigating the murder of Hanlé Lategan, to expose any evidence linking her case to the other cases. Police are confident they will succeed in bringing the suspects in these murders to book and said progress has already being made in the investigations.

“The police need to secure and protect our resources and processes to ensure a good outcome. No information regarding how the crimes were committed will therefore be communicated until all the linkages have been concluded,” Ernst said.

Police have also sent out a warning to residents to be vigilant at all times and offer the public these basic safety measures:

• Arrange to meet strangers in public places and do not deviate from this venue. Make sure there is proper security at the public place.

• Avoid isolated areas, especially when dark.

• Identify clients or buyers beforehand – any potential client not willing to properly identify him- or herself should be treated with suspicion. Sales representatives, agents, brokers, and individuals selling goods via media adverts are to make sure that their clients or buyers verify themselves by means of a brief profile.

• Inform a colleague or next of kin about details of the meeting. If in doubt about the meeting, take a second person along.

• A good practice is to have the first meeting in the office and make sure the office is properly secured. Use the first meeting to verify the client or buyer.
