Single mom turns sadness into something positive

Mom: I always wanted to care for and help people.

Ronita Fisher from Toekomsrus is yet another Carryou Ministry success story.

This single 36-year-old mother of two is a supervisor over 23 people, she oversees reports, ensures programmes are in place, and monitors workers on the field. Her full title is Child and Youth Care Programme Supervisor.

Ronita has been with Carryou Ministries for nearly 17 years and jokingly said she is as old as the furniture at the Toekomsrus Carryou Drop In Centre.

Originally she wanted to go into nursing as she had an interest in helping others but her matric results did not allow her entry.

Ronita then applied to be part of the Child and Youth Care Worker’s Programme (CYCW) and completed an 18 month training course.

I always wanted to care for and help people so when I met Sister Pam Jamison, Carryou Ministry’s founder she brought me on board.

“I was delighted. It was an opportunity to do something meaningful,” she said.

“If I am able to go home at night and know I have helped just one child, whether that is with his or her homework, helping get a birth certificate or being an advocate, I am happy.”

Much of her experience in dealing with what she does at Carryou is through going through the death of her late son after his fight with cancer.

“It helped me cope,” she said.

This modern day Mother Teresa turned her moments of sadness to help others and refers to her work as being very rewarding.
