Captain Liquor strike ends

Staff members were given an increase, but not the one they asked for.

The recent unrest in Aureus caused by disgruntled Captain Liquor staff protesting for a wage hike has come to an end.

Staff members have returned to work after management and unions reached an agreement on Wednesday, 18 May, three days into the strike.

According to Olga Deabreu, spokesperson for Captain Liquor Randfontein, management proposed a three-tier increase and a two-week bonus at the end of the year to staff.

Deabreu said the increases depended on which wage bracket staff members fell into. For those in the higher bracket, a seven per cent increase was given; for those in the lowest bracket, a nine per cent increase was given, and everyone in between got 11 per cent.

With regard to the two-week bonus, all staff get a bonus equal to two weeks’ wages at the end of the year. A further bonus, also of two-weeks’ wages, will be performance-based.

Richard Makumbila, a staff member at Captain Liquor said the staff aren’t happy about what management and unions agreed on but stated that it was better than nothing.

We’re back at work but the treatment isn’t very good,” he said.

Deabreu said, “We appreciate our staff. We need them and love them and we’re glad they’re back.”
