Sky-high bill leaves resident in shock

The resident has reported the leak to the municipality but has had no joy.

A Randgate resident’s water bill is sky high because of a recently discovered leak in his water meter box.

Fred Botes, the home owner who’s bearing the brunt of the leakage, explained that he first noticed the leak two weeks ago, when he decided he’d had enough of his high water bill.

He said he got a plumber out to inspect the house for any leakages. The plumber found that the leakage was within the water meter.

Botes said it is possible that the pipe was damaged when municipal workers dug up the pavement outside his house two months ago while trying to repair an electrical wire. The holes they dug were directly in front of and behind the water meter.

Botes said he reported the situation to the Randfontein Local Municipality. They said they’d send municipal workers to sort out the problem. A week went by, but no workers arrived.

He then approached his local Ward Councillor, Sina Erasmus, who said she’d also reported the situation to the municipality, but there is still no sign of any workers.

The longer the leak is left, the higher Botes’ monthly water bill will be. He wants to sort the issue out but said the municipality is making it difficult for him to do so.

The last bill he received from the municipality was for over R4 000. He refuses to pay that amount, because he didn’t use most of the water he was billed for.

Worse still – the renovations he’s doing on his house have come to a standstill, because the leak is preventing him from turning the water off to work on the plumbing.

The water leak is not small – it fills the meter box to overflowing.
