Man’s shock after road rage ‘attack’

'This clearly was a racist attack on me.'

Hendrik Phiri, 48, is still shaken after having been involved in what he claims was a racist road rage incident at an intersection on the R28 on Tuesday.

Phiri recalled the events of that day, saying he was driving over the bridge approaching the traffic lights, when he saw a bakkie behind him, with its lights being flashed. He says he honestly thought it was someone who knew him, but suddenly the bakkie recklessly overtook him and the occupant showed him the middle finger.

“I then continued driving behind him, crossing the intersection onto the Randfontein Road. The occupant of the bakkie then reduced speed and as I tried to pass him, he recklessly blocked my vehicle several times. This forced me to remain behind him.

“When we were approaching the second set of traffic lights, he suddenly hit his brakes, and I nearly bumped into him. He then continued driving at a reduced speed.

When I eventually managed to pull level with him, he swore at me and shouted the k-word.”

Phiri added after the man swore at him, the man drove away. Phiri added that he could not understand the man’s actions as he had done nothing wrong when approaching the traffic lights at the R28.

“This clearly was a racist attack on me,” he said.

He went to the Krugersdorp Police Station to report the incident, but was unable to lay a charge, even though he had the registration number of the vehicle.

Police explained to him that no damages or injuries had been incurred, and that a man cannot be arrested for using the k-word. Phiri plans to take the matter further and is consulting the Traffic Department.
