A woman was burnt to death and 12 others injured after a taxi and light motor vehicle collided on the R28 in Muldersdrift on the West Rand on Monday morning.
ER24 paramedics along with multiple other services, arrived on the scene and found a light motor vehicle on the side of the road while a taxi lay on its side in the middle of the road.
Russel Meiring, ER24 spokesperson said the taxi had caught alight after it overturned.
“Provincial fire services began to battle the blaze while paramedics assessed the scene.
It was later discovered that a woman lay trapped inside the burning taxi. Unfortunately, the woman had already succumbed to her multiple burn wounds and was later declared dead on scene.
“The remaining twelve patients were assessed on scene. One woman was found to have sustained critical injuries while the remaining patients sustained minor to moderate injuries. Paramedics treated the patients and provided the critically injured patient with advanced life support intervention.
“Once treated, the critically injured patient was airlifted by a private medical helicopter to a nearby hospital for urgent treatment. The remaining patients were transported to various hospitals in the surrounding area for further assessment.”
The cause of the collision is not yet known but local authorities were on scene for further investigations.
