R’ fontein Magistrate’s alleged attacker granted bail

The suspect took a hammer and smashed the windows of Koma's BMW.

The 21-year-old Pretoria man who allegedly attacked Randfontein Magistrate Mphafolane Koma’s vehicle is out on bail after he re-appeared in the Pretoria North Regional Court on Monday.

The man, who was arrested on Tuesday, 10 May, appeared in the Pretoria North Regional Court last week, but his bail application was unsuccessful.

The suspect is facing charges of malicious damage to property, intimidation and crimen injuria. In a surprise turn of events, the suspect was released on R3 000 bail today, and will re-appear in court on 27 May.

This comes after an incident occurred on Monday, 9 May, where the suspect took a hammer and smashed Koma’s BMW windows after they both stopped at a Pretoria North intersection at the same time.

Koma’s 12 year old daughter was in the vehicle at the time, and witnessed the incident. She took down the suspect’s vehicle registration number, which led to the police making an arrest. Koma was also allegedly called the K-word , which, according to him, could make this a racial attack. Koma does not know the suspect, and is unsure if he ever dealt with him, or someone he knows in a court case.

Mphafolane Koma confirmed the outcome of the bail application with the Herald this afternoon.
