Civilian injured during police/ 12 gunmen shootout

The robbery turned into a shootout between the suspects and police.

A group of 12 armed men robbed Shoprite in Mohlakeng over the weekend which ended up in a shootout in which a bystander was nearly killed.

Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson said the incident took place at approximately 7.45pm on Friday, 13 May.

The complainant alleged the 12 armed men held up the shop and pointed at the cashiers, instructing them to hand over money from the tills. Two suspects allegedly pointed at the complainant with their firearms, ordering him to accompany them to the cash officer where they took all the money from the safe.

A shooting then occurred between the police and the suspects in Moroka Street where a male bystander was injured and taken to the hospital.

A police vehicle was damaged – two bullet holes on the left side and two holes on the top.

“Numerous empty cartridges were found in the yard of a house in Moroka Street from which the suspects allegedly shot at the police. One suspect was arrested and a firearm was found in his possession with the serial number removed,” Ernst said.

Randfontein Station Commander, Brigdier Mashole Jacob Manamela commended the officers who responded to the complaint immediately, making an arrest and seizing the firearm.
