Cow on the loose causes stir in town

Cow believed to have jumped off its ride home.

Yesterday afternoon (Thursday, 12 May) a cow was the talk of the town. It took hours to take her by the horns.

The cow was first spotted by Darius Wilkins, reaction officer at Mapogo.

“I saw the cow when I was coming past the old Fruit and Veg building.

The cow was in the middle of the road and I rushed over to drive in front of it so that people wouldn’t crash into it. I had my sirens and lights on,” Wilkins explained.

While the cow was walking down Kenneth Road, Wilkins noticed that the grounds of the NG Randfontein North church opposite the Spur were open and chased the cow into the property to at the very least get it out of the road.

Wilkins was called out to another scene but managed to call the SPCA before leaving. When the Herald arrived on scene, the SPCA as well as groundskeepers of the NG church, were struggling to get the cow into the SPCA trailer.

Catching the cow was an even greater task, because the cow had long horns which could have spelled disaster to anyone making a wrong move. The cow was chased around the church grounds for hours before the SPCA and the groundskeepers succeeded in getting a rope round its neck and guided it onto the SPCA trailer.

Janette Muller, Randfontein and Westonaria SPCA Inspector, was able to track down the owner of the cow at his home in Rietvallei.

Muller said the cow had been bought on auction and that it probably jumped off the trailer it was being transported in. Muller took the cow back to the SPCA for holding until the owner collects it.
