Two dead in mysterious crash

Events around the crash are unclear.

Two men lost their lives while a woman sustained critical injuries after an incident involving a motorcycle in what emergency authorities are calling ‘unknown circumstances’.

The accident occurred in Diamant Street, Toekomsrus, on Saturday, 7 May.

Selina Harmse, resident of Toekomsrus, said it was brought to her attention that the motorcycle collided with a car. However, this claim has not been confirmed. Harmse said she was under the impression the incident was caused by a speed bump that was not clearly marked.

Harmse also complained about other road signs in Toekomsrus. They’re either non-existent or have worn over the years and never been replaced. This leads to regular collisions in Toekomsrus. “I fear for the safety of Toekomsrus’ children,” she said.

ER24 spokesperson, Chitra Bodasing, said the details surrounding the incident are unknown. On arrival at the scene, the ER24 paramedics found a motorcycle lying in the road, with three patients lying several meters from it.

There was nothing that could be done for the two men,” Bodasing said, and they were subsequently declared dead on the scene.

“The woman, who is believed to be about 30 years old, was found to have sustained critical injuries. She was treated and transported to the Leratong Hospital for further medical care,” Bodasing said.

Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police for the Randfontein Police said no witness statements have yet been obtained; however, she can confirm that there were three people on the motorcycle. She added that according to information she received, not one of them was wearing a crash-helmet.

The Randfontein Police would like to warn motorists and motorcyclists to adhere to the Road Safety Act and drive responsibly.
