R’ fontein Magistrate’s vehicle smashed with hammer

Koma says he cannot understand the motivation behind this 'racial attack'.

A 21-year-old Pretoria man has been denied bail in the Pretoria North Regional Court after attacking a Randfontein Magistrate’s car.

The suspect is facing charges of malicious damage to property, intimidation and crimen injuria after he was arrested on Tuesday this week. The incident took place in Pretoria North on Monday, 9 May.

Mphafolane Koma, the Randfontein Magistrate, alleges he was attacked by the man after being the first to pull off after they had both stopped at an intersection at the same time. The man then smashed the windows of his BMW with a hammer and called him the K-word.

The suspect then took off, but Koma’s 12-year-old daughter, who was in the car at the time of the incident, took down his vehicle registration number. With this information, the police were able to arrest the suspect.

Koma says he doesn’t know the man, but he could have dealt with him or someone he knows in court at some stage. He also says that he believes it was a racial attack because the man called him the K-word. Koma says that he cannot understand the motivation behind the attack.

According to a source at the Randfontein Magistrates’ Court, this matter will be handled by the Pretoria Regional Court.
