Family walks away from terrible car crash

A Randfontein family is left stranded after a multiple vehicle crash in Roodepoort.

Tragedy struck a Randfontein family just after things started looking up for them.

Three members of the Beyl family, Egbert (father), Monique (daughter) and Ruben (son) – two of whom sustained moderate to serious injuries – were involved in a multiple vehicle accident on Ontdekkers Road close to its intersection with CR Swart Road in Roodepoort on Friday, 29 April. Their vehicle, which was their only means of transport, is a write-off.

Mathilde Myburgh, a journalist at the Roodepoort Record, reported on the collision, telling us that a blue VW Beetle allegedly crashed into another vehicle, damaged a second vehicle and then crashed over the central island into two additional vehicles, one of which was the Beyl family’s car. The collision thus left five vehicles damaged.

What makes the collision a particular tragedy is that Egbert was on his way from a job interview after being unemployed for a long time. To add to that, they had just bought the the car they were in – so recently that the first instalment on the car hadn’t even been paid when the crash occurred.

Prior to the accident is Lindie Beyl with her daughter Monique and Mrs Thelma (Moniques’ new grade 1 teacher). Monique is currently in her first year at school and now a broken leg has set her back. File photo.

Egbert was on his way to pick his wife, Lindie, up from work when the collision took place. He sustained head injuries and his daughter Monique’s leg was badly broken. Both were treated at Leratong Hospital. Fortunately, Ruben did not sustain any serious injuries.

Egbert told the Herald that his head injuries have still not been stitched. He explained that he waited nearly eight hours after the crash to get stitches before leaving due to pure frustration at the poor service offered at Leratong. Luckily, Monique was treated well, which he said is the only thing that matters. However, his head wound has since become infected, but that was treated at Docville.

Lindie said she is thankful that her family is alive. Her daughter was released from hospital on Saturday, 7 May but has pins in her leg due to the bad break. The family now has to make use of Egbert’s parents’ vehicle, but this is just a temporary solution.

Lindie’s employer, Marinda van den Berg, has decided, out of the kindness of her heart, to replace their vehicle, but would welcome any assistance she can get. Contact Marinda on 082 453 8845 if you would like to help her.

The side of the Beyl family car was hit and the car’s floor was bent.
