Man attacked in complex parking lot

'We thought we were safe here.'

Jasper Steyn, a 56-year-old tour guide by profession and resident of a housing complex in Greenhills brutally was assaulted with a crowbar and held at gunpoint.

Steyn says at around 3.50am on Thursday, 5 May, he was on his way to his Toyota Tazz when he heard a noise coming from the parking area.

As soon as he turned the corner, a suspect hit him with a crowbar where he then tried to protect himself with his bag, but got hit over his hand in the process.

He then fell to the ground but quickly jumped up and went after the other suspect who was busy breaking a lock which Steyn used to secure his car to a pole.

The suspect then pulled out his firearm and pointed it against Steyn’s forehead. The suspect then mumbled “Start the car” to Steyn where Steyn decided to run away. When he got around the corner, Steyn’s legs went numb and he fell to the floor. Steyn’s wife, Magda, heard the noise and screamed as loud as she could.

Other tenants responded immediately by switching on their outside lights. In that time Steyn once again stood up and saw the two suspects casually walking to the gate where they entered by allegedly derailing and lifting the gate.

Steyn’s wife Magda, immediately called the police, who responded quickly. Police found five sets of fingerprints on Steyn’s vehicle and an investigation is underway by the Randfontein Police.

“The one suspect with the crowbar was also busy trying to steal another vehicle in the parking bay, I must have disturbed him. This is the second time that we experience such an incident in Greenhills. In August we moved here after another incident happened. We thought we were safe here.”

Magda says this is the sixth incident that happened in their complex and she strongly suggest that a security guard should be hired for extra protection.

Steyn – a self-proclaimed man of God – added he was protected by his Bible that was inside his bag when the suspect with the crow bar attacked him. According to him, the Bible stopped him from being injured severely. Steyn and his wife wishes to thank Constable Shoes Mosweu from the Randfontein Police for his quick response and help.
