Mother, daughter targeted while hitchhiking

Good Samaritan witnessed what was happening and chased the suspect, eventually handing him over to police.

A 31-year-old man is to appear in the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court for armed robbery. His victims were a woman hitchhiking with her daughter, 4.

The incident occurred at the intersection of the R28 and N12 in Westonaria at around 2.45pm on Thursday 28 April.

Captain Siphiwe Ndlovu, Westonaria Police spokesperson said the robber allegedly approached his victims, then held them at gunpoint and told them not to scream. He demanded the woman’s handbag.

“Whilst wrestling for the handbag, the victim’s daughter ran into the road, drawing the attention of motorists driving past. One motorist witnessed what was happening and stopped. The suspect then fled the scene on foot.

The rescuer chased after the suspect and managed to apprehend him.

“Whilst fleeing the scene, the suspect dropped his firearm, which the rescuer allegedly picked up after apprehending the suspect.”

The rescuer then took the suspect and the complainant to the police station where a case of armed robbery was opened and registered.

Whilst in the Client Service Centre giving a statement, a female senior citizen identified the suspect as the same person who had robbed her of her cellphone earlier that day. The suspect might also be linked to other robberies.

Colonel Selvan Moonsamy, Westonaria Police Station commander thanks the motorist/ rescuer for his commendable action that led to the arrest of the suspect.
