Update: improvements made at Crossing of Death
Dangerous intersection that claimed two lives gets a coat of paint, but more still needs to be done.
The so-called Crossing of Death Randfontein and Krugersdorp share shows the beginning of improvement.
Two elderly women lost their lives at the Northway Road-R24 intersection on Thursday 14 April.
Before this incident, residents have been complaining about the danger at the intersection as motorists are unable to see due to obstructions and faded road signs.
Road markings since have been repainted and more signage has been erected at the crossing. Rumble strips on the R24 also have been noticed, however, it is unclear whether they were put there before or after the crash.
Along with Peter Dick, ward councillor in Randfontein, the Herald visited the crossing.
It was found that more still needs to be done to ensure a safer intersection. Vegetation on either side of the west bound on Northway needs to be cut to improve visibility.
Positioning of signage approaching the intersection also needs to be improved as the boards are too close to each other, making it difficult to read them.
In addition, a four-way intersection sign on the R24 has been vandalised.
Cat’s eyes and reflective paint would also improve visibility at night as there are no lighting at the crossing.
