Bakkie rolls leaving eight injured

'The driver apparently tried to overtake another vehicle when he lost control.'

Eight people sustained various injuries when a bakkie overturned on the R501 approximately 15km outside of Carletonville on Saturday over the weekend.

Werner Vermaak, ER24 spokesperson said at around 2.30pm paramedics arrived on the scene where they found the bakkie in an open veld next to the road. Majority of its occupants were found walking around on scene.

“A 45-year-old man was found lying next to the bakkie in a critical condition. It is understood that he was sitting in the back of the bakkie when it overturned.

According to bystanders on the scene the bakkie rolled over him.

“He was found with several injuries including fractures and possible spinal injuries. The ER24 Medical Helicopter was called to the scene to airlift him to Sunshine Hospital for further treatment.

“The other occupants of the bakkie sustained minor injuries which included scrapes and bruises. They were later transported to Carletonville Provincial and The Fountains Private Hospital respectively.

“The exact cause of the incident is not yet known; however, it is understood from one of the occupants that the driver apparently tried to overtake another vehicle when he lost control,” said Vermaak.

Fire Services, Traffic and police services also attended the scene.
