UPDATE: Armed gang disguised as customers rob butchers

Randfontein Police warns community not to circulate registration numbers of suspicious vehicles on social media.

The Randfontein Police has confirmed that there was an armed robbery at Westgate Meat Market in West Porges involving six suspects on Tuesday.

According to Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson, the incident took place at around 5.55pm.

“It is alleged by the 32-year-old manager that six men entered the business as if they were customers. The men suddenly drew firearms and held up the staff and other customers.

The suspects removed cash from the cash registers and from the office.

“They then fled the scene. No injuries were reported to the police and the investigation into the matter is continuing.”

Ernst also warned the community about circulating registration numbers on social media regarding possible suspicious vehicles in the area.

“Unfounded allegations of this nature may result in the injury of innocent persons. This office pleads with users of social media to allow the police the opportunity to investigate information of this kind, before it is broadcasted on the social media circuit.

“Seemingly good intentions might result in the injury to an innocent person or have an adverse effect on the investigation,” Ernst said.
