Car deal goes sour: Man robbed, car stolen

Randfontein Police warn prospective sellers and buyers to be extra vigilant when doing transactions in cash.

A man in his 40s was left stranded, his life threatened and robbed of his personal belongings in a car deal that went sour.

Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson confirmed a supposed car deal went sour one Friday afternoon in April when a 41-year-old man was robbed of his vehicle.

It is alleged the victim was contacted by an interested buyer who wanted to buy a motor vehicle. The victim and the buyer met in Main Reef Road, Randfontein, where an amount of money was paid over to the victim, but not the total amount of the sale.

It is further alleged the buyer indicated that he must meet with someone to obtain the balance of the amount due. They allegedly drove towards the Zuurbekom road, where the buyer met someone on the road.

It is further alleged the unknown man then approached the victim, pointed at him with a firearm and also took money and a cellular telephone of the victim and fled.”

The Randfontein Police wishes to warn prospective sellers and buyers to be extra vigilant when doing transactions in cash, to refrain from travelling with large amounts of cash and to steer clear of meetings in isolated places.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) calls on the help of the community members to assist them with information.
