Smell of blood and bones coming from business

Testing Station owner: The smell is horrendous.

Jakes Jacobs, owner of the Randfontein Testing Station shared his frustration regarding a neighbouring business that dries blood and bones in Aureus.

According to Jacobs, the dreadful smell of the blood and bones comes from Ringdryer Specialist. He said the company dries blood and bones on the property to make bone meal.

“The smell is horrendous. This is the circumstances in which we have to work.

If it is not the smell, it is the flies,” he said.

According to Jacobs this has been an ongoing problem for the past five years and his customers also are complaining about the stench.

Wynand Human, a regular customer said, “The smell is unbearable.”

Jacobs said he has called the relevant authorities to investigate the situation, but it was unfruitful.

Leon Smit, owner of Ringdryer Specialist, allegedly has been told he should have measures in place to control the flies. According to Jacobs, Smit only has one fly catcher.

When approached for comment, Smit said, “I am the first one to admit there sometimes is an unpleasant smell.

I am not denying it. But what am I to do?

“When I was looking for a premises for my business, I enquired about land that was suitable for this kind of business. According to my zoning certificate, my business is classified as noxious and needs a premises in an Industrial 2 zone. As part of a noxious industry, boiling blood and bones, storing bones and drying blood are permitted. This is purely a case of bad blood with the neighbours.”

Smit also said he has called out pest control as he is aware of the flies.

“I am not moving. The testing station was built in the middle of a zone for a noxious industry.

My business is not the only one causing an unpleasant smell, this is a noxious area.

“I would like to have a good relationship with my neighbour so we can sort out the problem.”
