Toekies finally gets addiction support group

Allot of abuse against women and children stems from the abuse of drugs or alcohol - Bhana

Enrico Bhana, the new Chairperson for the Local Drug Action Committee (LDAC), is proud to announce that after 15 years, Toekomsrus will have their own Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) group.

Bhana, who is well-known for his work in the Toekomsrus community, joined hands with Breaking The Chains Rehabilitation Centre in Lenasia; Reverend Gaby Tucker as well as Graham and Tevin Frits to finally bring an AA and a NA to Toekomsrus.

This group had their first meeting on Tuesday, 5 April, where recovered alcoholic Willem van der Merwe, addressed and motivated the group of forty community members at the St Joseph Anglican Church.

Recovering alcoholics and drug users from the Breaking The Chains Rehabilitation centre, will be regular speakers at these AA and NA meetings.

Bhana says, “We are taking a holistic approach in our meetings.

I was told that about 60 percent of the Toekomsrus’s community members are drug users. Drugs are becoming a major problem in this area.

“A lot of abuse against women and children stems from the abuse of drugs or alcohol.”

Bhana told the Herald that his passion to make a difference in community members lives, comes from dealing with these drug related problems amongst his own family and friends.

Bhana said that the group is open to anybody that seeks and need help to get out of the claws of addiction. People of all races and religions are welcome and also friends and family that wants to help and support those in need.

“This is a support group where everybody shares their stories,” says Bhana.

Meetings are held every Tuesday and Friday evening at 7.30 pm at the St Joseph Anglican Church. For any information, please contact Enrico Bhana on 084 997 7252.
